The Foundations of the Earth
Why it has taken me twenty years to discover this fact, I cannot say. But, the study of the Bible has proven to be a lifelong pursuit. After all, we mortal beings are trying to figure out and understand an infinite, amazing God. So, when anyone says that they do not understand or agree with the Bible, my response is “Give it time. Wisdom is not found in the foolish.”
How often have I read the phrase in the Bible that says, “from the Foundations of the Earth”? I find at least 15-20 references to the Foundations of the Earth in the Old and New Testaments. Most of these verses expose only a few aspects of what was included in this primal event. The chief of God’s early intent was to qualify a people who would spend eternity with him. The fullness of time (Earth’s history) would be the amazing unfolding of a Grand Plan that God put in place at the inception of Earth.
I have come to understand that the foundations were not only the seminal moment of all time and history but a complex and astounding construction of every operation of Earth and the universe.
You see, gravity, light, and even time did not exist before God made them. Time is a construct of God. After creating the Earth, God created light and darkness as a new thing. Now, this happened BEFORE He created the sun, moon, and stars. God declared that these new inventions were “Time Measuring tools” that allow us to understand what time is. Imagine trying to tell time with no day and night, orbit of the moon, or cycles of the stars. There would be no time!
During the implementation of the foundations of Earth, God put in place the operations and measures that we can all depend upon. We take it for granted that clouds produce rain, oil and gold can be found in the ground, buoyancy allows wood and metal ships to float on water, magnetic fields and produce electricity, water boils at 212 degrees and freezes at 32 degrees, and planting a seed with produce food to eat.
I believe in, but do not argue here, for creationism. I am stating, however, that the operations of all science, wisdom, and history were laid in place long before Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden. God is far, far ahead of us in His abilities; and we are forever blessed to discover that the One who created the Earth also created each of us to enjoy His creation.
It has been aptly said, that “God Invents and man only discovers” what has already been put in place for very long ago.
If I could only calculate the millions of things that I require to make it through the day, I would still fall short of all that God engineered into this creation. For some reason, I need 6-8 hours of sleep. I need food and drink to sustain me. Blood pumped by the heart pushed blood through my lungs in order to deliver the oxygen necessary for my body to function.
I start my car relying on more than mechanical principles to operate. Something called gas is fed to the engine causing explosions in the cylinders to propel a ton of metal down the road. All this time, my brain is thinking about all kinds of things. Shouldn’t I be amazed that such a thing as electrons can be pushed through wires to power lights, motors, and a computer?
Rather than try to list all the operations that make life on Earth possible and pleasant, I conclude that an infinite Being (God) made all that sustains and enhances life long before you and I came along. I can only express my thankfulness for how thoughtful, caring, and kind God is for even the smallest of common wonders.
